Washing Machine Troubleshooting Guide for Dubai Homes
A washing machine fault can interrupt a household quickly. Use this guide to identify safe checks, understand what the symptom may indicate and know when to stop using the appliance and call a technician.
Washing machine not draining
Standing water can be caused by a kinked drain hose, a blocked user-accessible filter, an obstruction in the drainage route or a pump fault. Check that the programme has finished and inspect the visible hose. Only clean a filter when the manual identifies it as a customer-maintenance item; retained water may be hot.
Washing machine not spinning
A machine may refuse to spin when the load is unbalanced, the drum is overloaded or water has not drained. Redistribute the load and try the correct programme. Recurring failure can involve the door lock, drive system, motor, suspension or bearings and needs diagnosis.
Leaks around the appliance
Stop the cycle and close the water supply if it is safe. Inspect visible inlet and drain connections, the detergent drawer and the door seal without removing panels. Too much detergent can also create excessive foam. Water can travel beneath cabinets, so its visible location may not reveal the source.
Loud noise or severe movement
Confirm the appliance is level and the load is balanced. Transit bolts must be removed from a newly installed machine according to its instructions. Persistent grinding, scraping or heavy knocking can indicate a foreign object, worn suspension, bearing damage or another mechanical fault.
Door locked after the cycle
The lock can remain engaged while water is present, the drum is hot or the cycle has not fully ended. Wait for the manufacturer-specified release time and check the display. Never force the door or bypass the lock.
Machine not starting or filling
Check the plug, socket, water tap, visible inlet hose, door closure and child-lock setting. If the supply is available but the machine remains inactive, the inlet valve, door interlock, control system or another component may require testing.
Stops mid-cycle or displays an error
Record the exact code and consult the manual for your model. Codes are not universal: the same letters can mean different things across brands. A single reset may be appropriate only when the manual recommends it; repeated resets can hide a continuing fault.
Odours and washer-dryer performance
Remove laundry promptly, use the correct detergent quantity and clean the drawer, seal and approved maintenance points. For a washer-dryer, drying capacity is usually lower than washing capacity. A reduced load and clean filters may help, while a continuing no-heat condition needs inspection.
Repair cost and repair-or-replace decisions
Price depends on the model, access, diagnosis, labour and parts. A fixed figure cannot be responsible before inspection. Consider the appliance age, condition, repair history, part availability, energy use and the approved quotation compared with replacement.
Stop and call for help when
- There is smoke, sparking, a burning smell or repeated electrical tripping.
- Water is reaching a plug, socket, cable or electrical component.
- A gas appliance smells of gas or a safety control is damaged.
- The appliance makes severe grinding or metal-on-metal noise.
- Safe isolation is not possible or you are unsure what to do.
