Dishwasher Care: Cleaning, Drainage and Warning Signs
When a dishwasher leaves residue, smells unpleasant or stops draining, the cause is not always a failed part. Loading, the filter, blocked spray paths and detergent choice can all affect the result. This guide explains the safe checks worth making first.
Loading affects cleaning more than many people expect
Arrange items so water can reach the dirty surfaces. Large trays, chopping boards and pan handles can prevent a spray arm from turning. Cups and bowls should not collect dirty water, and small items must be secured so they cannot drop onto moving parts. Before starting, turn the spray arms gently by hand only where the manual permits and check that they move freely.
Scrape large food waste into the bin, but follow the appliance and detergent guidance about pre-rinsing. Over-rinsing can waste water, while heavy debris can block the filter. Keep the detergent-dispenser lid clear so it can open during the programme.
Use dishwasher detergent—not hand-washing liquid
Ordinary washing-up liquid can create excessive foam and may cause leakage or poor operation. Use a dishwasher product suitable for your model and local water conditions, and follow its dosing instructions. If tablets remain partly undissolved, check that the dispenser is not obstructed and that the selected programme is appropriate for the load.
Clean the filter without forcing it
A filter collects food particles before they reach the pump. If it becomes clogged, cleaning performance and drainage can suffer. Switch the dishwasher off, wait for hot parts and water to cool, then remove and rinse the filter only as described in the model manual. Use a soft brush if permitted and refit every part securely.
Before reaching into the base, look carefully for broken glass or sharp fragments. Wear suitable protection and never put your hand into a pump opening. If the filter is damaged, will not lock into place or cannot be removed normally, arrange service.
Check the spray arms and door area
Food deposits can block spray-arm holes. Follow the manual before removing an arm. If removal is approved, rinse it and use only a non-damaging method recommended by the manufacturer. Wipe the door edges and gasket with a soft damp cloth; do not stretch the seal or use abrasive cleaners.

Dishes are still dirty
Check loading, spray-arm movement, filter cleanliness, detergent placement and programme selection. Cloudiness, grease and gritty deposits can have different causes, so note the pattern rather than simply increasing detergent.
Water remains in the bottom
A small amount around the filter can be normal on some models. A larger pool may point to a blocked filter, kinked drain hose, sink-waste connection problem, pump obstruction or fault. Cancel or drain the programme as the manual directs. Do not tip a built-in dishwasher or repeatedly force it to restart.
The dishwasher smells unpleasant
Clean the filter, remove trapped food, wipe the gasket and run the care programme recommended by the manufacturer. A drainage or installation problem can cause smells to return even after the interior is clean.
The door leaks
Stop the programme. Check for an item preventing closure, excessive foam, a visibly displaced seal or an appliance that is no longer level. Do not continue running it to locate the leak; water can damage cabinetry and reach electrical parts.
Stop using the dishwasher when
- Water is escaping onto the floor or into surrounding cabinetry.
- There is smoke, a burning smell, sparking or repeated electrical tripping.
- The door latch, hinge or cable is damaged.
- There is broken glass where it cannot be removed safely.
- The appliance makes a new severe grinding or electrical buzzing sound.

Depending on the complaint, a technician may check water entry, heating, circulation, drainage, the pump, sensors, door sealing, wiring and controls. Poor cleaning can result from use, installation or a component fault, so the pattern of symptoms matters.
Before you call
Record the brand, model number, error code, programme used and whether water enters and drains. Note whether the problem affects every load, whether detergent dissolves, and where any water appears. A clear photo of residue or standing water may help; keep the appliance off if it is leaking.
